Seika Foods created this candy in Kagoshima in 1924. The founder got the idea after seeing factory workers cutting traditional mochi with scissors. He added citrus flavor and packed it like Western caramel, creating a unique treat that has remained a Japanese favorite for a century.

There is no need to remove the clear film around each piece. The wrapping is oblaat, a thin starch film that melts in your mouth. This keeps the chewy candy from sticking to your fingers or the box.
